Types of EVA granule grades: What are the different grades of EVA material?

EVA is specially used in the production of many products. EVA is a copolymer that consists of a large percentage of ethylene and small proportions of vinyl acetate, which are different in different grades of vinyl acetate. The types of grades of EVA compounds include 18% and 28% grades, which are among the most important and practical grades of EVA and are used in various industries according to their application and are among the basic needs of industries. In this article, we are going to introduce the types of EVA granule grades and learn about its widely used grades. Follow us until the end of the article for more information in this field.

What is EVA granule?

EVA consists of ethylene and vinyl, which is also known as polyethylene vinyl acetate (PEVA). Polyethylene vinyl acetate is a soft heat polymer elastomer that usually consists of 10-50% of its weight is vinyl acetate and the rest is ethylene, which has a very good transparency and gloss. These materials have a closed cell structure and have excellent performance such as flexibility, high resistance to water and moisture, excellent thermal insulation, and long-term durability and stability, which are used in many industries. EVA can be processed by various methods such as extrusion molding, calendering, injection molding, air molding, and foaming. Among the most common grades of EVA granules, 18% and 28% EVA can be mentioned. There are three different types of EVA copolymers, which differ in the content of vinyl acetate (VA) and how the materials are used, and each has its own application:

  1. Modified polyethylene (low density VA): This type of EVA has a small percentage (approximately 4%) of vinyl acetate, which is also known as polyethylene. This material is processed as a thermoplastic and its features include light weight, high flexibility, softness and excellent transparency. Due to its transparency and glossiness, it is considered suitable for film production, and the non-toxic properties of EVA increase its use in food packaging.
  2. Thermoplastic (medium density VA): This type of EVA copolymers have a weight percentage between 4 and 30% of vinyl acetate and are considered a type of thermoplastic elastomer. Among its most important uses, we can mention the production of various types of glue.
  3.  Rubber (high VA density): This type of EVA contains more than 40% of vinyl acetate and has very high rubber properties. These materials are used in the production of products that require high rubber properties, due to their flexibility, transparency and Excellent glossiness as well as hardness retention at low temperatures are used. Other properties of this category of EVA copolymers include resistance to pressure cracks, resistance to ultraviolet radiation. This type of EVA is used to produce hot waterproof adhesives.

Types of EVA granule grades

As we have already mentioned the types of EVA granule grades, we found out that EVA compound in two grades of 18% and 28% are the most used and depending on the type of application, they are used in different industries:

 EVA granule 18%

This type of EVA granule has less rubbery properties and consists of 18% vinyl acetate and 82% ethylene. Its applications include the plastic industry, wire and cable, paint, adhesives, paper processing, extrusion sheets, pipes, sandals, shoe soles, injection foams, cushion objects, toys, thermal insulation and fishing net floats, packaging films, etc.

Grade VS430 is one of the well-known grades of EVA 18% which is used in the production of sports foams, greenhouse films, shoe soles, etc. Another grade of EVA 18% is EVA7350, which is used for injection molding and is used in conjunction with other additives and copolymers to produce a variety of products in various industries such as packaging, footwear, adhesives, plastics, etc.

EVA granules 28%

This type of granule consists of 28% acetate and 72% ethylene vinyl alcohol, which has high elasticity and excellent gloss and good resistance. Plastic has decreased, but its resistance and durability in the environment increases. Due to its high transparency and excellent flexibility, it is widely used in the film industry and packaging of food products. Another use of it is the production of hot melt adhesives, making plastic pipes, making all kinds of shoes and sandals, making foam sheets, solar encapsulation, using it as a drug transfer agent in medical engineering, etc. Among the most famous grades of EVA 28%, we can mention EVA 28025, EVA 28400, VA 910 and VA800 grades.

Comparison Types of EVA granule grades

After examining the different grades of EVA granules, now we want to compare them with each other. This copolymer is used in two grades of EVA granules, 18% and 28%, in the production of many products. The main difference between them is the amount of vinyl acetate and its average molecular weight. The higher the percentage of VA or vinyl acetate, the better the adhesion to the polar adhesive surface. Therefore, the 28% EVA compound has better adhesion to the polar adhesive surface than the 18% EVA compound.

On the other hand, the lower the VA percentage, the greater the adhesion to the non-polar background, so in this case, EVA granule 18% has more adhesion than 28% and it is suitable to use. 28% EVA has more rubber properties than 18% EVA, and for this reason, they are used in the production of products that require more elasticity. In general, this polymer product is marketed by many manufacturers with different grades, each of which has its own advantages and characteristics.

28% EVA has more rubber properties than 18% EVA, and for this reason, they are used in the production of products that require more elasticity.

The top  producing countries of  EVA granule

Due to the wide application of EVA compound grades, many countries are applying for it, hence the demand for this valuable material in many industries and many countries are producing this product. But in the meantime, Asian countries have the highest rank in the production of EVA granules. China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam can be mentioned among these countries. Because these countries are the largest shoe producers and widely use EVA granules.
